Case study : Malta limestone quarry
Due to blasting laws in Malta being sevearly restricted the Quarry was only running on a three day per week basis to the blasted material had to undergo a primary, and secondary crushing to get down to a marketable product. D&D Mining were approached to establish if we could support the quarry by way of a used machine that could cut the product at a rate that was economical, and load out the pre cut product from base floor to dump trucks.
The machine we offered was a Voest Alpine ATM 70 that had an overall cutting height of 7.3 metres as the Quarry face was 7 metres this machine suited the bill dimensionally.
The machine cut and loaded the material (70 Mpa) at a rate of 50 cube per hour, but due to the cutting technique of the machine, the product was cut so that it only required a secondary crushing to render it to a size required.
For Malta Power that required a machine to be on site in Malta in 10 weeks, we supplied the machine and spoil clearance system in 8 weeks to site, and the machine cut the tunnel with minimum down time, and within budget.
The quarry decided that the machine worked so well that they purchased a further machine to increase productivity. the machines are still part of the contractors fleet today.
